Marine Instructor, Daniel Boone High School Marine Corps JROTC



Master Gunnery Sergeant John Daniels Jr. is the Marine Instructor of the Daniel Boone High School Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. He is a 1988 graduate of Daniel Boone High School and an alumnus of the MCJROTC Program.

He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on Sept 15th, 1988 and proceeded to Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), Parris Island, South Carolina for basic training. Concluding boot camp he reported to Marine Corps Communication Electronics School (MCCES) 29 Palms, California where he trained to become a Communication Center Operator. In March 1989, he reported to Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa Japan and was assigned as a watch stander for the base Communication Center. In April 1990, he executed orders to Marine Corps Combat Development Command (MCCDC) Quantico, Virginia for duty. Here he worked as a Communication Center Watch Supervisor. In June 1994 he reported to 7th Communications Battalion, III Marine Expeditionary Force for duty. He supported multiple command exercises including Joint Task Force Exercise Cobra Gold in Korat and Songkhla Thailand, Tandem Thrust in Queensland Australia, and Ulchi-Focus Lens in Pohang South Korea.

In July 1997 he reported to 8th Marine Regiment, Camp Lejeune, NC where he assumed the duties as the Data Communications Chief. In January 2000 he reported to Recruiting School in San Diego California and upon conclusion reported to Recruiting Station Nashville Tennessee. His prosperous tour earned him the Marine Recruiter of the Year two years in a row. He returned voluntarily to recruiting duty in 2005 for a second tour of independent duty as the Station Commander of RSS Knoxville Tennessee. He earned the Staff Noncommissioned Officer of the Year two consecutive years. At the end of FY-2007 he led the entire state of Tennessee and northern Alabama in contracting and shipping resulting in a repeat of “Recruiting Station of the Year” and once again named the SNCOIC of the year. He executed orders to 8th Communication Battalion in August 2008 and was redirected to II Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) for direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). He was promoted to the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant (MGySgt) on June 1st, 2011.

In June 2011 MGySgt Daniels reported to Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC) and assumed the duties as the Regimental Communications Chief. In 2012 he reported to the Center for Security Forces in Brunswick Maine where he completed Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE), school. He was then certified as a Special Operations Capability Specialist-Communicator (SOCS-C). On January 6th, 2014 he was reassigned as the MARSOC Communications Chief until he retired in October 2016. Master Gunnery Sergeant Daniels’ awards include the two Meritorious Service Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, seven Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, nine Marine Corps Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Iraqi Campaign Service Medal with Bronze Star, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Korean Service Defense Medal, and the Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
